The fragile materials create a hold. This hold is everything that encapsulates this fractured moment. Fractured pieces built up and broken down one in another, calling us to be still and present within its space.

This fractured piece holds so much strength. This strength stands as a rebirth for the maker to not only place it in a space and time but to create a tension, the same tension that holds you in a place you thought you knew everything about. But what do you really know? The knowing of what you are seeing disintegrates with time.

Wood comes from earth, which is always changing but ever remaining. Wood allows itself to be shaped and formed into new beings; cut, distressed, plied, and fractured. As the wood disintegrates before you, it embodies a moment you have never experienced, but you understand it now as you see it. The tension encapsulated between the frailty and strength in the wood structure before your eyes causes question. You lose everything you thought you understood about this wood. It comes from a place once thriving on earth, broken apart, remade into a newness that is still only a fractured piece of its first existence. The mass of fractures before you thrives from loss.

Splintering wood, chipping away the unnecessary remnants, bearing the weight of each piece. Binding two remnants together, grouping and breaking down with hands and feet; piecing together, moving and shaping it. Desiring the pieces to stand on their own. The new remains slightly held together, barely maintaining its balance.

It falls.

Replaced, refigured, and restored to the original configuration

Falling again, losing hope that it can sustain without any help.

The loss of sustainment moves downward toward doubt and anxiety of staying in this space of overbearing heaviness. Can it become lifted, or strengthened? Can strength come from the breaking down of all these small fragments and dissolving moments?

Wooden planks

The planks stacked beside each other are sustained with the remnants grounding them to the floor. The fragments hold weight more than the whole, because of how destroyed, broken and disintegrated they have become. The precious contemplation of individual parts is valuable; it holds more strength than its entirety. Building together of these components from the ground up help, they support each other to sustain a whole structure.

The altar.

Every thought is removed. The mounds of fragments thrust upon the floor dropped down at the foot of the structure; the opening and closing. It is open on each side, to move in and out into new perceptions of memory, opening and closing the past and present. This portal made up of every fractured piece of time and memory, transcending into something stronger.

Within the altar comes safety, which protects and forms a hold, a strength that encapsulates you. The stewardship of pieces support one another to strengthen and embrace in the creation of the safe place. Safety is simultaneously present with vulnerability, creating tension. The vulnerable state, which we come to this dwelling place that holds memory, keeps us still, and weary. The presence allows us to find meaning in the access of this altar, stirring up in us the closeness of gain and loss.

The loss is a reminder, a memory passing through you and creating heaviness. This heaviness drowns you with tension and anxiety, looking for an answer.

Do we escape or do we sit with this pressure upon us to find answers, or a new way of understanding this place? Where do you escape to avoid the painstaking and pressure of the altar?

The void.

You enter in to a void of black nothingness. The space envelops us by its illusion of complete emptiness in perpetuity. The void is never ending, present and steadfast. Its permanence with its physical malleability draws you in to be present. Its encapsulating hold within this massive ocean of blackness suspends and contains you. The void is endless and eternal surrounding you throughout space and time, never ending always continuing on. The void is the wall; it surrounds the wall and the floor beneath you, all around holding you in this space. It contains you, and contains motion within the emptiness, turning into crumbling waves coming out of the void into the space.

The hold within you as well as within a space brings strength. That strength is all knowing and sustains you throughout time. The pieces and fragmented altar represent the capacity and at the same time the frailty of our existence, acknowledging this frailty allows for strength to arise and sustain you.

What remains is the presence you find from the altar to the void, and passing back through it you find this gripping weight holding you. A moment in time suspended by discarded remains in eternalness.
